Academics: Enrichment

There are many enrichment opportunities to supplement the regular curriculum that extend beyond the classroom setting. These are in the form of after-school activities, clubs, and contests.

  • Math Olympiad is a club comprised of 4th, 5th, and 6th graders that meet to work on problem solving activities.
  • Math League press is a written test/contest taken by students Grades 5 through 8. (6th grade recently placed 1st in the state of DE and 5th in the nation).
  • Math League-Grade 7 and 8 has placed first in the region.
  • It's Academic is an Academic Bowl type contest comprised of 8th graders who compete with other diocesan schools.
  • Math-Science Olympiad(2 teams) Grades 4-6 compete against other diocesan and private schools in this annual competition.
  • Grades 7-8 compete against all elementary schools-public and private at the state level. In 1999 our team won 1st Place.
  • In the State of DE and went on to complete in Chicago at the national level. For the past 14 years CCS has ranked among the top ten schools (often named 'runner up') Center for Talented Youth is a program sponsored by Johns Hopkins that recognizes students who achieve above a certain percentile on standardized tests. Each year Corpus Christi students are well represented in this group.

Other contests:

  • Declamation -Students in Grades Five through Eight compete with other diocesan schools in this public speaking activity.
  • Diocese Spelling Bee is open to students in grades 4 through 8.
  • Model UN team is a team composed of students in Grades 7 and 8.
  • Stock Market Team.
  • Fire Safety Essay and Poster Contest is an annual contest open to all students.
  • The Memory Book-Middle School students design, layout and publish an annual yearbook.
  • Newspaper Club publishes the Blue and White Review four times a year.
  • Environmental Club works to heighten the awareness on environmental issues throughout the school.
  • Art Honors Club works on many art activities throughout the year e.g. painting store windows, creating murals, designing and making banners.
  • Student Council is composed of 6th, 7th and 8th grade students.
  • Educational Fieldtrips supplement the curriculum. Some examples: DuPont Playhouse, Miriam Theater, Broadway, Winterthur, Hagley, Longwood Gardens, Opera Delaware, The Delaware Symphony, Franklin Institute, Philadelphia Zoo, Camden Aquarium, The Renasissance Faire, Sight and Sound Theatre, Christmas tree farm, apple orchard and corn maze--to name a few

Grants:

During recent years Corpus Christi has received in excess of $20,000 in grants. We are proud of the fact that those who make these awards deem Corpus Christi School as being very grant worthy. These funds have enabled us to enrich the curriculum in the following ways:

  • Artist in Residence program allowed each student in Grades 4, 5 and 6 to design, write, illustrate and publish a non-fiction book.
  • Artist in Residence program to teach cartooning as an art form.
  • Artist in Residence program that allowed students to create and paint clay masks
  • Artist in Residence program to encourage the writing of poetry.
  • DE Symphony in-school ensemble program familiarizes students in Grades 3 and 4 with musical instruments that compose a symphony orchestra.
  • A WeatherNet NBC 10-weather station is active on the Corpus Christi campus.
  • Planetary Science Kit supplements the science curriculum.
  • SRA Reading Kits and Math Lab were purchased with grant money.
  • Book Binding System to bind student work was purchased with grant funds.
  • Environmental awareness grant funds were used to provide a full day workshop for all students given by Dr. Anthony Fredricks, author/scientist/ teacher.
  • Mathematics grants were used to purchase supplemental manipultives.
